The DM may have to eyeball it and estimate how many hit points are enough without making the battle an endless grind. All this helps the monster last much longer in combat, especially if it's fighting alone or with just a few weak minions by its side. The most obvious and important modification is boosting the monster's basic numbers, such as its hit points, its saving throws, and, if applicable, its spell save DC as well. The monster may simply gain a few attributes or abilities or have existing ones swapped for stronger abilities. Monster stat blocks have a lot of moving parts, so there are endless options for modifying a monster from the ground up.
